Think Globally, Spin Locally

Here's a new twist on spin class: Featured on today's Daily Candy newsletter, Connect 18, a city-based exercise studio, is taking multi-tasking to the next level by offering "specialized educational video courses designed to be viewed while riding a stationary cycle." Evidently, you can now burn calories with cultural panache.

Classes include Beginner Spanish in Mexico (bike through the barrio while yelling "vamanos!") and EMotion, explained on the company's very Global Exchange-feeling website as just like a really good trip on E: "Through media images, guided imagery, music and tonality, you will be guided into your body and your mind to create an enhanced feeling of well being." Right. Sounds like a state of anaerobic hyperventilation to me.

I can't help but wonder however, that while an effort to improve your spiritual well-being and cultural know-how as you squeeze in your daily exercise reeks of good intention (like dirty gym clothes, perhaps?), just how much can you really absorb while pooling sweat underneath a stationary bike?

I thought that was the whole point. The fancy smart people did a study and found that you retain more knowledge when you are exercising.

It's not about multitasking, it's about an overall enjoyable experience. Lots of people are looking for ways to entertain themselves during exercise, from exercise based video games to singing karaeoke while cycling (at Crunch). Learning interesting new things is fun for some, and that's the focus.
